MCA release two new pocket guides to highlight importance of seafarers’ wellbeing and mental health at sea

08/07/2020 00:00:00 The importance of mental health and wellbeing is something that the MCA has worked hard with industry to promote and support.  ‘Wellbeing at Sea: A Guide for Organisations’ and ‘Wellbeing at Sea: A Pocket Guide for Seafarers’ have been created by the MCA in consultation with unions, ship owners and maritime charities; and explore a range of mental, emotional and physical issues crew might experience on a day-to-day basis on-board vessels.

Survey and inspection to restart for some UK vessels

07/07/2020 00:00:00 A phased return to Survey and Inspection activity in the UK will commence from 20 July.   Marine Offices can now take bookings for 20 July onwards. Survey activities will be carried out in accordance with the guidance outlined in MIN 623 (M+F) and Operators are strongly advised to consult this document prior to making any arrangements. However, Marine Office front desk counter services will continue to remain closed at this time.    Overseas survey work and the survey and audit of internationally trading vessels will not resume at this time but will remain under review.

SMarT Funding Extension

02/07/2020 00:00:00 Maritime cadets will be allowed to extend their funding support given through the Maritime Training, under plans announced by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The MCA has confirmed it will extend the Maritime Training (SMarT) Fund by up to three months for those cadets who have not been able to finish their training and gain their Certificate of Competency (CoC), within the 150-week SMarT funding period because of COVID-19.

Training providers must make health and safety a priority

12/06/2020 00:00:00 During this challenging time we’re aware that seafarers have concerns about accessing colleges and training centres to sit written exams and complete training. However, training providers must ensure that the health and safety of those attending is a priority.   Training providers and colleges must refer to the requirements from Public Health England or the equivalent devolved body and the Department of Education before they consider re-opening as an educational setting.  MCA approved colleges and training Centres based outside of the UK must refer to guidance issued by their own administrations.
