Day of the Seafarer

Published: 25/06/2021

Today is Day of the Seafarer (25 June) and, this year, the focus is on a ‘fair future’.

The day is an official United Nations international observance day organised by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and it aims to increase awareness of the world's 1.5 million seafarers, of which approximately 23,000 are UK seafarers (DfT report February 2021, Seafarers in the UK Shipping Industry 2020)

The UK Flag is committed to a safer, healthier, greener – an overall fairer – future for our seafarers and we are listening.

Senior press officer Heather Skull is joined by UK Maritime Services’ chief examiner Ajit Jacob, seafarer safety & human element policy manager Hazel Lewis, head of seafarer safety and health Julie Carlton and assistant director of modernising maritime education Dr Carole Davis to discuss the results of the IMO polls and tell you more about what the Maritime & Coastguard Agency is doing to boost a fairer future for our seafarers.
