The MCA Human Element Team commission scientific research into identified areas so that they can provide industry with guidance based on the most recent human element theory and knowledge and assist IMO with developing their guidance and regulations.
The most recent projects have focused on seafarer fatigue:
- Investigation of the 8-hours on / 8-hours off Seafarer Watchkeeping System- this short project investigated the effects of the 8-hours on 8-hours off watchkeeping system and compared it to the 6-hours on /6-hours off system. It used a combination of a fatigue risk prediction model in conjunction with on-board data collection from seafarers. The methodology, findings and conclusions are contained in this report.
- Modelling of the hours of work and rest of Merchant Navy Watchkeepers and Tug Crews - this project looked at a wide range of typical and atypical watchkeeping patterns. The project was conducted using theoretical modelling and a fatigue risk prediction model. It further examined fatigue risk prediction model. It further examined fatigue risk onboard tugs using a small sample of actual crew time sheets. The methodology, findings and conclusions are contained in this report.
