Yacht Master's Guide to the UK Flag

The Large Yacht Code mainly deals with issues specific to yachts, such as construction and manning standards. There are a number of other legal requirements which apply to all types of UK ships, including yachts, and the MCA has identified a need to provide some guidance to masters, and owners/ managers, on the nature of these and what to do about them.

The MCA has now produced a Master's Guide to the UK Flag - Large Yacht Edition which is intended to be an quick reference guide to some of the issues covered during a master's UK Certificate of Competency or UK Legal and Administrative Procedure (UKLAP) courses. Subjects covered are:

  • Manning qualifications (CECs, STCW watch rating, medical certificates and discharge books).
  • Hours of work
  • Crew agreements
  • Official log books and their completion
  • GMDSS logs
  • Health and Safety (Officials, committees and risk assessments).
  • Medical stores and care
  • Surveys, audits and ILO Inspections
  • Continuous Synopsis Records
  • UK Publications to be carried
  • Training
