Who are we?

The UK Ship Register (UKSR) is part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The team provides world class flag services, maintaining the highest standards and reputation, which customers appreciate and value.

Katy Ware

Katy Ware, Director of UK Maritime Services

Katy was appointed as the Director of UK Maritime Services (formerly Maritime Safety and Standards) in April 2016.

Katy studied Marine Technology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where she graduated with Honour’s degree in Marine Technology. Katy qualified as a Chartered Engineer with the Royal Institute of Naval Architects.

Upon graduation from University Katy joined LRS as a trainee ship surveyor.

In 1999, Katy joined the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) Southampton Marine office as a flag State surveyor, Port State Control Officer, ISM lead auditor, ISPS Code officer and ILO Auditor.

Katy took a two year secondment with the Department for Transport, where she worked on maritime environmental issues.

In 2009, Katy was promoted to Principal for Marine Technology for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Katy was the lead policy official for all matters relating to life-saving appliances and fire-safety.

From 2011 Katy was appointed the Permanent Representative of the UK the International Maritime Organization. Her role was to facilitate, coordinate and negotiate all maritime matters between other Governmental Departments, the European Union and the International Maritime Organization. Katy currently retains this status.

Commercial Director Dan Vivian

Dan Vivian, Commercial Director

Dan has a wealth of commercial experience centered on innovation, growth and sustainability. Dan’s focus at UKSR in the upcoming months will be squarely on vessels, seafarers and organisations that sail under the UK flag. His aim is to fulfil the mission of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of safer lives, safer ships, cleaner seas.

It’s about positive collaboration across industry, regulators and innovators to keep the seas open for trade and growth, decoupled from damaging emissions and practices.

Jackie Barnetson

Jackie Barnetson, Head of Operations

Jackie is passionate about ensuring that the UK Ship Register's current and future customers receive the best possible service from the UK Flag, regardless of how or when they contact us.

First class service delivery is key for Jackie and is working with colleagues from across the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to ensure that the organisation creates a service which is easy to deal with and supports the organisation's mission to be the responsible flag of choice.

Julie Carlton, Head of Seafarer Safety and Health, UK Seafarer Services

As Head of the Seafarer Safety and Health Branch since 2009, Julie has oversight of the seafarer medical examination system and human element policy. She has policy responsibility for seafarer health and safety regulations and guidance (including the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers) and living and working conditions. In recent years, this has involved implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) and the ILO Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (ILO 188), which the UK ratified in 2013 and 2019 respectively. Julie is the current chair of the ILO’s Special Tripartite Committee on the MLC.

Adam Risbridger, Business Development Manager

Adam has over 15 years of commercial experience, most recently working for a global Professional Body representing Quality and Auditing Professionals, including those based in the maritime sector.

He joined the UKSR team in January 2022 and is responsible for growing the UK Flag and increasing engagement with different stakeholders within the commercial shipping sector. Adam aims to achieve this by creating positive collaboration and positioning the UKSR as the flag of choice for new and existing customers.

Ajit Jacob, Chief Examiner, UK Seafarer Services, and Head of Seafarer Technical Policy.

Ajit Jacob is the Chief Examiner for MCA since October 2018.

He joined the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in 2013, after spending 17 years in the Merchant Navy. During his career at sea, he served as officer on Aframax Tankers and VLCC’s and as Chief Officer and Master on Ro-Pax Ferries.

He joined MCA as an Examiner of Mates and Masters with the Seafarer Training Branch. Thereafter, he joined the Marine Office and has been carrying out Surveys, Audits, and Port State Control Inspections on a broad range of vessels as a qualified surveyor. Ajit’s previous role was as Client Technical Manager for UK Ship Register.

Ajit has a Master’s in international Commercial Law, is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute and Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Suzanne Landolfi, Key Account Manager

Almost ten years ago, Suzanne joined the MCA as team leader of the Certificate of Equivalent Competency (CEC) team, and then spent five years in Inspection Branch, dealing with Port State Control and giving policy advice and technical support before joining the UKSR and becoming a CAM.

“Using my experience, I aim to do the best for our customers and the UK flag”, says Suzanne. “I understand and can help our customers to overcome any hurdles and in doing so make sure that our customers receive the very best levels of customer service.”

Faith Thomas, Key Account Manager

Faith is a highly motivated, strategically driven account management professional with over twenty years experience working with core sectors within local and national government, as well as the healthcare industry. Faith’s ability to work with divergent groups has stood her in good stead when it comes to developing effective networks and driving those key relationships. She has an excellent track record of working with both internal and external key stakeholders to deliver first class service to customers and partners, and has always enjoyed holding a trusted advisor role with many of her previous clients. Faith will be helping to manage key customer service activities, supporting delivery of key outcomes, and upholding the excellent standard that the UKSR is world-renown for.

Meet the rest of the team

 

The Registry of Shipping and Seamen (RSS)

The RSS team are based in Cardiff but are intricate to the daily operations of UKSR and our customers.

The team handle queries ranging from vessel transcripts (this relates to who owns a boat and the vessel name), official logbooks, births and deaths, medals, to boat registration.

The team have recently launched an improved online registration system. Once an account has been created, any one of these queries can be processed quickly empowering customers to get on with their daily business activities.

Seafarers

The Seafarers department focuses on the human side of shipping. They are here to assist with enquiries ranging from seamans cards, certification and discharge books, ENG1 medical certificates and medical failures, as well as SMART funding.

There is also a particular focus within the team on living and working standards of Seafarers, established by the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). These minimum requirements ensure that all UK seafarers welfare and environment is one of sustainability and safety.
